King Charles is ‘open’ to reconciliation with Prince Harry on one condition

King Charles III may be willing to mend fences with Prince Harry — but only under one controversial condition, according to a royal commentator.
Speaking on the May 28 episode of the “Royals Uncensored” podcast, Daily Mail columnist Maureen Callahan claimed that while the monarch would welcome some form of reconciliation with his younger son, Meghan Markle would not be part of the equation.
Callahan’s claim comes more than six years after Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal life and moved to the United States — and amid renewed speculation about whether the Duke of Sussex could ever find his way back into the royal fold.
According to Callahan, who also hosts the podcast “The Nerve,” the door may not be completely closed between father and son.
“What I constantly hear from reporters who come on ‘The Nerve’ is that Charles would like to have some sort of reconciliation. He would be open to it — but it is without Megan,” she said. “Megan cannot be part of the picture. I mean, it’s code for if they divorce and Charles is still king.”
As for Harry’s older brother, the Prince of Wales, “I think that door is closed with [Prince] William, firmly…” Callahan added.
The monarch and his second son finally ended more than 18 months of estrangement with a face-to-face meeting in London last September. But reports confirmed that Charles and Harry did not meet when the king traveled to America in late April to participate in events tied to the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations, fueling continued speculation about the status of their relationship
The Duke of Sussex has publicly said he longs to heal the family divide, especially in the wake of his father’s 2024 cancer diagnosis.
During a May 2025 interview with BBC News, Harry admitted, “I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point continuing to fight anymore. Life is precious. I don’t know how much longer my father has. He won’t speak to me because of this security stuff. But it would be nice to reconcile.”
Harry’s remarks came after he lost a legal challenge over his U.K. security arrangements — an issue he has repeatedly argued affects his ability to safely bring Meghan and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, back to Britain. Earlier reports suggested Harry hoped government-funded protection could eventually be restored, potentially removing one of the biggest obstacles to family visits and future reconciliation efforts
Callahan argued that any potential thaw faces a major hurdle: Meghan herself.
If the commentator’s claims about the view inside royal circles are accurate, the issue is not simply Harry’s return but whether Meghan would ever again be accepted by the institution.
“We hear that they are persona non grata,” Callahan said on “Royals Uncensored.”
She acknowledged that such a stance may sound harsh but argued that The Firm has historically shown little hesitation when protecting the institution. “Remember, they were ruthless when it came to [Princess] Diana. They were ruthless,” Callahan reiterated.
According to the commentator, the situation may be even more complicated because she believes Meghan has little interest in rebuilding those relationships herself. “In America, our view of it is there is absolutely no way back for Megan. Megan does not want to go back,” Callahan alleged. “She has burned those bridges.”
Even if family ties were repaired, Harry has publicly said he does not envision returning as a full-time working royal.
As he prepared to release his memoir, Spare, in 2023, he sat down with Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes and was asked whether he could ever see himself returning to royal duties. The duke shook his head and answered simply, “No.”
That position has remained consistent throughout his public appearances since stepping away from royal life. While Harry has repeatedly expressed affection for his family and a desire to repair damaged relationships, he has not indicated any interest in resuming the role he left behind when he and Meghan chose to put down new roots in Montecito, Calif.
The couple has focused on building a life outside the monarchy through media projects, business ventures and charitable initiatives.
Financial pressure claims resurface
Callahan also brought up reports claiming the Sussexes are facing growing challenges as they attempt to build a post-royal future.
“In the United States, the reporting is that they are just about out of money, Harry and Megan, and things are dire,” she said on the podcast, later claiming that Harry and Meghan “are having a lot of trouble monetizing what they used to be able to monetize, which was their connection to the royal family, which was [sharing] secrets of the royal family.”
“The information supply has been choked off,” Callahan continued. “The stories are that, you know, they may need to downsize that $14 million Montecito mansion. The reporting most recently in the New York Post is that Megan, she denies this or [her] camp denies this, but that she is actively looking for acting work which is a far fall for her…”
As for Harry’s future, Callahan suggested that any path back to royal acceptance would require a dramatic change in approach.
“I think that what Harry should do is something I don’t know that he is any longer capable of doing, which would be to metaphorically fall on his sword, beg for forgiveness, do hard humble work to earn back a modicum of trust,” she said.
