UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Resigns Amid Mounting Political Pressure.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned after months of mounting pressure from within the Labour Party, saying he accepted that he was no longer the right person to lead the party into the next general election.
Announcing his decision outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, June 22, 2026, Starmer said every decision he made in office was guided by his commitment to putting the United Kingdom first. He also paid an emotional tribute to his wife, Vic, and their children.
Starmer’s resignation follows Labour’s poor performance in recent local elections, declining public support, and growing calls from Labour MPs and senior Cabinet members for him to step aside.
Reports also point to internal party divisions and concerns over his leadership ahead of the next general election.
He will remain as caretaker prime minister until the Labour Party elects a new leader, with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham widely seen as the leading contender to succeed him.
