Who is Paul Sorvino?

Paul Anthony Sorvino was an American well-known actor, opera singer, businessman, writer, and sculptor. Often, he portrayed authority figures on both the criminal and law enforcement sides of the law. He was most known for his roles as Paulie Cicero (based on Paul Vario) in the 1990 gangster film Goodfellas and NYPD Sergeant Phil Cerreta on the second season of the TV series Law & Order.

Moreover, he has portrayed a variety of father figures, including Juliet’s father in Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film Romeo + Juliet as well as guest appearances as the father of Bruce Willis’ character in Moonlighting and the father of Jeff Garlin’s character in The Goldbergs. In addition, he took supporting roles in A Touch of Class, Reds, The Rocketeer, The Cooler, and Nixon (as Henry Kissinger).

Although he was usually cast in dramatic supporting roles, he had occasional leads in films including Bloodbrothers, and also in comedic roles including his turn as a bombastic Southern evangelist in Carl Reiner’s Oh, God!. Because of his exemplary performance, he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor for the 1972 play That Championship Season. Later, he starred in film adaptations.

He began his career as a copywriter in an advertising agency. For 18 years, he took voice lessons. And decided to go to theatre while attending The American Musical and Dramatic Academy. In 1964, he made his Broadway debut in the musical Bajour, six years later, he appeared in his first film, Carl Reiner’s Where’s Poppa? starring George Segal and Ruth Gordon. He went on to play a supporting role in 1971, in Jerry Schatzberg’s critically acclaimed The Panic in Needle Park, starring Al Pacino and Kitty Winn. Next, he received critical praise because of his performance as Phil Romano in Jason Miller’s 1972 Broadway play That Championship Season.

He then appeared in another George Segal-starring film with a prominent supporting role in the Academy Award-winning romantic comedy A Touch of Glass (1973). The next year in 1974, he played Harry Walters, in It Couldn’t Happen to a Nicer Gut, a real estate salesman randomly picked up by a beautiful woman (JoAnna Cameron) and raped at gunpoint as a prank. In 1976, he appeared in the Elliott Gould/Diane Keaton vehicle I Will, I Will… for Now. He also starred in weekly series including; We’ll Get By (1975 as George Platt), Bert D’Angelo/Superstar (1976, in the title role), and The Oldest Rookie (1987 as Detective Ike Porter).

In 1976 also, he directed Wheelbarrow Closers, a Broadway play by play Louis La Russo II that starred Danny Aiello. In 1981, he played the role of Italian-American communist Louis C. Fraina in Warren Beatty’s film, Reds. Whereas in 1985, he appeared in Larry Cohen’s horror film The Stuff as a reclusive militia leader alongside future Law & Order co-star Michael Moriarty. In 1991, (he replaced actor George Dzundza in a new role) by taking the role of Sergeant Phil Cerreta on the popular series Law & Order. However, he left the role after 29 episodes citing the exhausting schedule demanded by the filming of the show.

A need to broaden his horizons, and the desire to preserve his vocal cords for singing opera. In 1993, he substituted for Raymond Burr in a Perry Mason TV movie, The Case of the Wicked Wives. Next, he appeared as Bruce Willis’ father in the weekly series Moonlighting and the “Lamont” counterpart in the never-aired original pilot for Sanford and Son. Some of his other eminent roles were caporegime Paul Cicero in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas (1990) and Henry Kissinger in Oliver Stone’s Nixon (1995). In addition to Goodfellas, he also played in The Rocketeer as mob bosses Eddie Valentine and Tony Morolto in The Firm.

He went on to narrate the series The Big House in 1998 for The History Channel. The next year, he directed and again starred in (Albert playing a different role) a TV version of That Championship Season. Furthermore, he voiced the main antagonist, Mr. Shrek, the CEO of Future Tech Industries in Het Arnold!: The Movie. From 2000 to 2002, he had a starring role as Frank DeLucca in the television drama That’s Life. He also starred as Al Miller, father to Bill (Mark Addy) in the comedy Still Standing.

Moreover, he filmed The Trouble with Cali in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area of Pennsylvania. And also he directed and starred in the film and also his daughter Mira also starred in the film. In 2008, he played GeneCo founder, Rotti Largo in the musical film Repo! The Genetic Opera. Working again with Repo! director Darren Lynn Bousman, Paul played God in The Devil’s Carnival. A short film screened on tour beginning in April 2012.
