This is the story of a loving military officer who rose to the prestigious rank of Rear Admiral.
His name was Rear Admiral A.A. Sam-Seigha, a proud son of Nembe in Bayelsa State. He served in the Nigeria Navy with distinction and was widely regarded as an upright and disciplined officer throughout his years of service.
After retirement, he used his hard-earned benefits to purchase a building in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja — the nation’s capital. The property was acquired through his wife at the time, a decision he made out of love and trust.
Then came the shock.
One day, he woke up to devastating news: his wife insisted the house must be sold. At first, he thought it was a joke. But when she persisted — even offering to give him only one-third of the proceeds — reality began to dawn on him.
He sought legal advice. His lawyers asked a simple but painful question:
“Sir, whose name is on the purchase agreement?”
He wasn’t sure.
As days passed, the truth emerged — the house had been bought solely in his wife’s name.
What followed was heartbreaking. The house was sold. The proceeds were divided into three equal parts: one part to him, one part to the children who sided with their mother, and one part to the wife.
From his one-third share, Rear Admiral Sam-Seigha returned to the Bayelsa State capital, Yenagoa, where he built a modest retirement home. It was there he lived out his remaining days — reportedly battling the silent weight of depression caused by family betrayal.
I am privy to this story because I was his neighbor. He was a member of our landlords’ association, and during our interactions, he often spoke about the painful chapter of his life.
Sadly, he will be buried at our area in Bayelsa Palm Road, two weeks from the publication of this story. In his final instruction, he requested to be laid to rest in that small retirement home he built in Yenagoa.
This is the kind of betrayal that cuts deeper than a Roman sword — not from an enemy on the battlefield, but from the very people one calls family.
Marriage is built on love, yes — but also on wisdom.
Trust is beautiful — but documentation is wiser.
Men and women alike must be mindful of the decisions they make in marriage, especially when it concerns lifetime investments.
He who has ears, let him hear.
Rest in peace, Rear Admiral. ⚓
Your watch is over.
