The Punch, June 26, 2009. Page 9

A United States-based journalist and author Mr. Tony Oyatedor, has said that leaders from the troubled Niger Delta area should be held responsible for the current crisis in the oil-rich region.

Oyatedor said past and present leaders of the region were culpable because they failed to champion the cause of the ordinary and the development of the region while they held public and political offices.

He said this at a news conference he addressed in Kaduna on the forthcoming seminar on how to end religious crises in Nigeria scheduled for July 16th in Abuja,

According to him, the leaders of the Niger Delta region engage in personal aggrandizement to the detriment of their deprived people when they have the opportunity to improve their condition of living.

These long years of neglect he said, hardened the youths of the area and resulted in the current armed struggle with security agents.

He said that the current military operation against militants would not put an end to the armed struggle in the Niger Delta region.
