At the age of 15, he had his first role in a school musical. Following his graduation from college, he landed several stage roles and went on to appear in the CBS drama Blue Bloods and the Netflix series Jessica Jones before landing the script for The Band’s Visit. Seven times over nine months, he auditioned before landing the role for which he received Lortel Award and Drama Desk Award nominations before winning the Tony Award.
In 2019, he began starring as Prince Amir in the LGBTQ+ fantasy podcast The Two Princes. The next year, he became a starring cast member as Sergeant Hasim Khaldun on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Next, he appeared in the 2021 film, Zola as Sean, the title character’s fiance. In 2020, he was set to appear in a starring role in The Public Theatre’s new musical adaptation of the 2007 film, The Visitor alongside David Hyde Pierce. Ari’el who has Yemeni and Ashkenazi Jewish roots was cast to play the character of Tarek, an undocumented Syrian refugee.
Publicly, he talked about his frustration over his character’s accent. And during an interview with Playbill, he stated his intent to “speak English without any hint that [his character] was not raised in the United States”. A few weeks into lockdowns, The Public Theatre released a video of a musical number from the show that featured lead vocals from Ari’el. Moreover, the show was set to return to the stage by October 2021, for its official opening.
However, the show was delayed a few days before previews were slated to begin in order to address depictions of race and Arab-American representation. It was announced a few days later that he and The Public Theatre’s leadership had made a “mutual decision” that Ari’el would depart the production. And thus he was replaced by his understudy, Ahmad Maksoud.
