Cecily Strong (Cecily Legler Strong) is an American comedian and actress. She has been a cast member of Saturday Night Live since 2012. Strong was employed at SNL while she was performing improv at The Second City in Chicago.

She co-anchored Weekend Update during her second and returned to the cast the next year without the anchor duties. Strong has other roles like voice work on The Awesomes, supporting roles in films like Ghostbusters, The Meddler, and The Female Brain.

In 2015, Strong hosted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Additionally, she is the starring in and producer of Apple TV+ musical comedy series Schmigadoon! Strong authored her first book, This Will All Be Over Soon and was published in 2021. She was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the 72nd and 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards for her work on SLN.

Strong was born to Penelope and William “Bill” Strong in Springfield, Illinois. She grew up in Oak Park, Illinois. William, her father served as an Associated Press bureau chief and now runs his own public relations firm. Her mother is a nurse practitioner. After her parents divorced, Strong took the side of her dad. Her great inspiration in the SNL came from Phil Hartman.

Strong regularly performed at The Second City and iO Chicago. She performed on a cruise ship for four months together with other Second City members. Cecily’s appearances include at the Chicago Sketch Fest, Chicago Just for Laughs, the New York Sketchfest, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Goodman Theater, the Bailiwick Theater, the Mercury Theater, and with the all-female improv troupe Virgin Daiquiri.

On 15th September 2012, Strong began her tenure as a featured player on Saturday Night Live. She became a repertory player the next season. Additionally, she co-anchored the recurring Weekend Update segment with Seth Meyers. Cecily co-anchored with Colin Jost later and was replaced with writer Michael Che on Weekend Update in September 2014. Strong was nominated in 2020 for her first Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series for her work on the show and again in 2021.

Outside SNL

Strong was featured as an entertainer at the 2015 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. She interacted with politicians of all persuasions including President Obama. Strong took pictures at the US Secret Service, host location the Washington Hilton, Brian Williams, Sarah Koenig, and the state of Indiana.

Together with Nasim Pedrad and Jay Pharoah, Strong appeared in a commercial for Old Navy in 2016. In the same year, Strong joined the climate change documentary show Years of Living Dangerously as a celebrity correspondent. She was a guest star in TBS’s Angie Tribeca as Samantha Stevens and in Fox’s Scream Queens as Catherine Hobar in 2016. Since 2017, she has appeared in a series of commercials for Triscuit.

Strong wrote her first book This Will All Be Over Soon published on 10th August 2021. She appeared in That Damn Michael Che, an HBO Max’s six-part comedy series featuring Michael in 2021. Additionally, she is the starring and producer of Schmigadoon!, a musical parody series on Apple TV+.

In October 2021, It was announced that Strong makes her New York stage debut at the end of the year. This will be in an Off-Broadway revival of The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, Jane Wagner’s one-woman play which starred Lily Tomlin in 1985.
