Who is Dianne Feinstein?

Feinstein is an American politician who is a member of the Democratic party and has served since 1992 as the senior United States Senator from California. She was the mayor of San Francisco from 1978 to 1988. 

 

Feinstein served the city government in the 1960s. In 1969, she joined the San Francisco Board of Supervisors via election. She was the board’s first female president in 1978. This was also the time during which the mayor George Moscone and city supervisor Harvey Milk were assassinated by Dan White which a lot of attention from the entire nation. Feinstein took Moscone’s position as mayor becoming the first woman to occupy the mayor’s office. During her tenure, she facilitated the cable car system renovation as well as superintending the 1984 Democratic National Convention.

In 1990, Feinstein ran for governor but lost. She then won a special election in 1992 to the U.S Senate. Together with Barbara Boxer, she became the first U.S Senator. She has been reelected five times. She also received 7.75 million votes in the 2012 elections which was the most popular number of votes in the history of U.S Senate elections. Feinstein formed the Federal Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 which expired in 2004. However, in 2013, she formed another new assault Weapons Ban Bill that failed to qualify. In addition, she is the first and only woman to become chair of the Senate Rules Committee between 2007 and 2009 as well as the Committee on Intelligence from 2009 to 2015. She is also the first woman to preside over a presidential inauguration in the U.S.

After the retirement of Barbara Mikulski in January 2017, Feinstein is the oldest sitting senator in the U.S at 87 years old. She is also the longest-serving female Senator and as of April 13, 2021, she will surpass Hiram Johnson as the senator from California who served the longest.

Dianne Feinstein’s Political Career

Early Career

Feinstein joined the Board of Supervisors in 1969 after being elected and maintaining the position for 9 years. During her time on the board, she ran for the mayor of San Francisco in 1971 and in 1975 but was unsuccessful. Feinstein became a target for the New World Liberation Front due to her position. This was an anti-capitalist terrorist group that organized bombings in California during the 70s. In addition, the terrorist group set a bomb on the windowsill of her home but it did not go off. They also shot at a beach house through the windows. Later in 1978, despite opposition by Quentin L. Kopp, she got elected as president of San Francisco.

After the assassination of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk by the previous supervisor Dan White, Feinstein became acting mayor on November 27, 1978. This was a result of her position as the president of the Board of Supervisors. In addition, the vote and the majority won which led to the appointment of Feinstein as Mayor of San Francisco. On December 4, 1978, Chief Justice Rose Bird of the California Supreme Court inaugurated her as mayor hence she became San Francisco’s first mayor.

Gubernatorial election

In 1990, Feinstein ran for governor of California but was unsuccessful. Although she won the Democratic Party’s primary elections, she lost to Republican Senator Pete Wilson in the general elections. In 1992, due to failing to disclose her contributions and expenditures for the campaign, she received a fine of $190,000.

Senate Career

After Wilson resigned leaving the Senate seat vacant, a special election was held on November 3, 1992, and Feinstein won. She also became Senior Senator of California since she was deleted to a term that had not yet expired. In addition, despite Barbara Boxer also occupying the senate seat, Feinstein senator officially as soon as the election was certified, before Barbara. She got re-elected in 1994, 2000, 2006, 2012, and 2018. In fact, after getting elected in 2012, she set the record for the most popular votes in the history of U.S senate elections. In October 2017, Feinstein announced that she would be running for reelection in 2018. She finished first in the jungle primary and later won reelection in the general elections held on November 6.

Dianne Feinstein’s Awards and Honors

IOn June 4, 1977, Feinstein received an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from San Francisco’s Golden Gate University. In 1984, she got an award from France known as the Legion of Honour. Later on November 3, 2001, she earned the Woodrow Wilson Award for her service to the public from the Woodrow Wilson Centre of the Smithsonian Institution in Los Angeles. In addition, she won the Nathan Davis Award from the American Medical Association for her efforts toward the betterment of medical health. Then in 2015, she received the title of one of The Foward 50.
