Who is Minnie Driver?

Minnie Driver, fully known as Amelia Fiona Jessica ”Minnie” Driver is a famous British-American actress and singer. Driver rose to popularity with her break-out role in 1995’s Circle of Friends. She went on to star in numerous films such as the cult classic Grosse Pointe Blank, and Gus Van Sant’s Good Will Hunting for which she got nominated for both the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Driver additionally starred in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, Owning Mahowny, and provided the voice of Lady Eboshi in Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke.

Minnie received her television debut in a 1991 TV advertisement for Right Guard deodorant. In 1991, she also made her stage debut, supplementing her income by performing as a jazz vocalist and guitarist. She featured in an episode of Maigret in 1993 together with Michael Gambon and Michael Sheen. Driver appeared in The Day Today, on British television, with comedian Steve Coogan and for satirist Armando Iannucci. She also had short roles in Casualty, The House of Eliott, Lovejoy, and Peak Practice. She received broader public popularity when she played the lead role in Circle of Friends in 1995.

Driver went on with supporting roles in GlodenEye (1995), Sleepers (1996), Big Night (1996), and Grosse Pointe Blank (1997). She played alongside Matt Damon as Skylar in the drama Good Will Hunting (1997), receiving nominations for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Minnie was also considered to portray Rose DeWitt Butaker in the 1997 movie Titanic, however, director James Cameron felt she was too old and so Kate Winslet was cast.

Driver later starred in Sandra Goldbacher’s movie The Governess in 1998. She then co-starred alongside Morgan Freeman and Christian Slater in the action thriller Hard Rain the same year. Driver served on various animated features, voicing Jane in Disney’s 1999 version of Tarzan and Lady Eboshi in the 1999 English-dubbed launch of the Japanese film Princess Mononoke. She had a recurring role on Will & Grace as Lorraine Finster, the nemesis of Karen Walker (Megan Mullaly) and daughter of Karen’s lover, Lyle Finster (John Cleese) in 2003 and 2004.

Amelia Fiona Jessica was born in London to Gaynor Churchward (1937-2021) and Charles Ronald Driver (1921-2009). Her mother was a fabric designer and former couture model, while her father was a director of London United Investments. He received the Distinguished Flying Medal for his role in the Battle of Heligoland Bight. Minnie’s parents were never married as her father was married to another woman throughout his relationship with her mother. They broke off their relationship when she was aged six, and her father was born in Swansea, Wales, and was of English and Scottish descent.

Driver was born in a family of two children. She has one older sibling, sister Kate, who is a film producer and manager. 2007 to present

Minnie made a come back to TV in the FX Network show The Riches in March 2007. Driver was scheduled to appear in The Simpsons Movie, however, her appearance was cut from the last version. She appeared in the January 2010 episode of Modern Family called ”Moon Landing”. Minnie starred in the television series The Deep and appeared in Conviction, in the comedy-drama Barney’s version, receiving a Genie Award for Best Supporting Actress.

She began filming for The Crash in October 2013, which was launched on January 13, 2017. Driver landed the lead role in the ABC sitcom Speechless, portraying the mother of three children, one of whom has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. The series debuted in the 2016-17 television season but was canceled after three seasons in May 2019.

Music career

Driver started making music at boarding school. She then collaborated on Bomb the Bass’s album Clear, in 1994, as part of the outfit River. Minnie was part of the Milo Roth Band, which got a recording deal when she was aged 19. She later signed with EMI and Rounder Records in 2001 and performed at the SXSW music festival. The title track of Everything I’ve Got in My Pocket, her first album, topped at No. 34 in the UK, and the track ”Invisible Girl” topped at No. 68. She wrote 10 of the 11 songs on the album. She was also the supporting act for the Finn Brothers on the UK portion of their world tour in 2004.

Driver portrayed Carlotta Giudicell in Joel Schumacher’s movie The Phantom of the Opera, based on the musical of the same title by Andrew Lloyd Webber in 2004. She sang ”Learn to be Lonely”, an original song written for the movie by Lloyd Webber. However, due to her lack of opera experience, all her songs as Carlotta were dubbed by opera singer Margaret Preece. She launched her second album, Seastories, featuring guest appearances by the Cardinals, Ryan Adams, and Liz Phair in July 2007. Minnie launched a third album titled Ask Me to Dance in October 2014, which consisted of tracks by Neil Young, Elliot Smith, and The Killers.

Driver began a podcast, Minnie Questions with Minnie Driver in 2021. She asks guests a series of seven questions, inspired by the Proust Questionnaire. The guests have comprised Nick Jonas, Chelsea Clinton, and Cindy Crawford.
