Park Shin-hye is a famous South Korean professional actress and singer. She is recognized for starring in the television dramas Stairway to Heaven (2003) and Tree of Heaven (2006). Park is considered one of the most prolific actresses of her age.

Career beginnings: 2003-2008

Park became recognized after she portrayed the younger version of Choi Ji-woo’s character in the famous Korean drama Stairway to Heaven in 2003. She increased her filmography list via supporting roles in various television series, the most recognized being as a rebellious teenager in the drama special Very Merry Christmas in 2004. Later she has cast in her first adult leading role in the South Korean-Japanese melodrama Tree of Heaven (2006). She received a lot of praise from critics for her performance. The series aired in Japan, hence giving Park more exposure abroad.

Shin-hye got her movie breakout in the film Evil Twin (2007), a summer horror flick. She played two roles: one as the main character, and the other as the ghost of the main character’s sister, who haunts the other sister following her death. Park then played her initial antagonist role in the romantic comedy series Prince Hours, a spin-off to Princess Hours (2006). Also, she starred in the weekend drama Kimcheed Radish Cubes as the female lead. Apart from acting, she hosted the variety program, Fantastic Partner, from 2006 to 2007 and got awarded Best Newcomer in a Variety Show at the MBC Entertainment Awards.

Rising popularity: 2009-2012

Park received more popularity after starring as a cross-dressing heroine in the romance comedy music drama You’re Beautiful (2009) together with Jang Keun-suk. Although it got average ratings in South Korea, it received a great following and earned high ratings in Japan. Park then released the tracks ”Lovely Day” and ”Without Words” for the drama’s original soundtrack. She starred in the low-budget romantic comedy movie Cyrano Agency in 2010. It revolved around a dating agency assisting its customers in the hearts of the people they desire.

The sleeper hit became a critical and commercial success, receiving 2.7 million admissions nationwide, becoming the 8th best-selling movie of the year. She received the ”Most Popular Actress” award in the movie category at the Baeksang Arts Awards. Also, she voiced the main character of the animation movie Green Days: Dinosaur and I, premiering at the 15th Busan International Film Festival, and got positive critics. She starred in MBC’s youth melodrama Heartstrings (2011) alongside Jung Yong-hwa. After the film, she received more fame in Japan and signed an exclusive contract with Japanese management agency IMX. She starred in her initial Taiwanese drama, Hayate The Combat Butler the same year, based on the Japanese shonen manga of the same title.

2012

Park won the Popular Asian Star award at the LeTV Movie and Drama Awards. She was then cast in the third season of the KBS drama special, Don’t Worry, I’m a Ghost in 2012 and it broadcast on July 15. For her performance, she won the Best One-Act Special Actress Award at the 2012 KBS Drama Awards. She joined the reality show Music and Lyrics the same year, collaborating with singer Yoon Gun to compose a song called ”I Think of You”. Park was cast in the third installment of tvN’s ”Flower boy” series titled My Cute Guys together with actor Yoon Shi-yoon, premiering in January 2003.

Breakthrough and mainstream success: 2013-present

Park featured in the comedy-drama movie, Miracles in cell No. 7 in 2013. It became one of the highest-grossing Korean movies, She then won the ”Best Supporting Actress” award at the 33rd Korean Association of Film Critics Awards. Park held the ”2013 Park Shin Hye Asia Tour: Kiss Of Angel” to celebrate her 10th anniversary as an actress, in four Asian countries. She became the first actress to hold tours spreading across Asia. Later she starred in actor and singer So Ji-sub’s music video ”Eraser” for his album Two’clock….Playground, together with former child actor Yoo Seung-ho.

In the same year, she co-starred together with Lee Min-ho in The Heirs, a teenage drama written by Kim Eun-sook. 2014- 2016

Park made her small-screen return in SBS medical drama Doctors, playing a troubled teen who later transformed to become a successful doctor in 2016. The drama became a hit and peaked viewership rating and popularity charts in its 10-week broadcast. Then she featured in the comedy movie My Annoying Brother as a judo coach, together with actor Jo Jung-suk and Do Kyung-soo of Exo. Park was selected as the Most Favored Korean Actress by fans of the Korean Wave in the United States the same year.
