Raymond Allen Liotta was a prominent well-known American actor and film producer. He was well-known for his roles as Shoeless Joe Jackson in Field of Dreams (1989), Henry Hill in Goodfellas (1990), and Tommy Vercetti in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002).
His other notable roles include Ray Sinclair in Something Wild (1986). Because of this role, he received a Golden Globe nomination. He moved to New York City after college where he got a job as a bartender at the Shubert Organization and landed an agent within six months. One of his earliest roles was from 1978 to 1981 as Joey Perrini on the soap opera Another World. Later he left the show and moved to Los Angeles. In 1983, he made his film debut in The Lonely Lady. And got his first major role in 1986 in the film Something Wild. Because of this role, he received his first Golden Globe nomination the nomination being for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture. Ray portrayed the ghost baseball player Shoeless Joe Jackson in 1989 in the fantasy/drama film Field of Dreams.
Then the next year he portrayed real-life mobster Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese’s commercially successful Academy Award-winning film Goodfellas 1990. His other leading role was in 1994 in the science-fiction/action film No Escape. He went on and starred in the sci-fi/thriller Unforgettable in 1996. In 1997, he received critical praise for his turn in James Mangold’s film Cop Land and in 1998, he received critical praise for his performance in Phoenix as a compulsive gambler. In 1998 also, he portrayed singer Frank Sinatra in the TV movie The Rat Pack. Because of his role in the TV movie, he received a Screen Actors Guild Guild award nomination. In December 2001, he starred as himself in the sitcom Just Shoot Me. Moreover, he also played 2001 the father of drug dealer George Jung in the film Blow. Ray appeared in the Joe Carnahan-directed film Narc in 2002 as Detective Lieutenant Henry Oak. This role led to an Independent Spirit Award nomination and a Phoenix Film Critics Society Awards nomination for Best Supporting Male. In 2003, he reunited with director James Mangold alongside Alfred Molina and John Cusack in the dark horror-thriller Identity.
He narrated Inside the Mafia for the National Geographic Channel in 2005. And in 2006 he reunited with Narc director Carnahan in Smokin’ Aces in which he portrayed an FBI agent named Donald Carruthers is one of the lead roles. He appeared with John Travolta in 2007 in the movie Wild Hogs and as the City’s mayor in Battle in Seattle. In addition, he starred as a detective alongside Cuba Gooding Jr. in the film Hero Wanted in 2008. Also in 2008, he made a guest appearance on the SpongeBob SquarePants episode “What Ever Happened to SpongeBob? The next year he co-starred alongside Harrison Ford 2009 in Crossing Over. In 2009 also, he played in the Jody Hill comedy Observe and Report as Detective Harrison as Seth Rogen’s nemesis from the local police.
Ray starred opposite Channing Tatum in 2011 in The Son of No One and for the first time in his career with Al Pacino. He made his Broadway debut in 2004 opposite Frank Langella in the Stephen Belber play Match. In the 2010s he appeared with Steve Carell in Date Night and with Zac Efron in Charlie St. Cloud. Also as a detective alongside Christian Slater and Viking Rhames in the independent drama Snowmen and The River Sorrow. In 2012, he starred in the Andrew Dominik film Killing Them Softly alongside Brad Pitt and James Gandolfini. And as in 2013 as the character of Roy DeMeo in the Ariel Vromen film The Iceman. Moreover, in 2014 he also had a supporting role in Muppets Most Wanted. That same year, he played a preacher in the faith-based film The Identical.
His other projects of 2014 include Kill the Messenger with Jeremy Renner, Stretch with Chris Pine, and a David Guetta video. In 2015, he starred in the Western miniseries Texas Rising for The History Channel. He then narrated the AMC docu-series The Making of the Mob from 2015 to 2016. Between 2016 and 2018, the opposite Jennifer Lopez starred in Shades of Blue. Ray became a spokesperson for Pfizer’s Chantix advertising campaign in 2018. In 2019, he appeared as a divorce attorney in Noah Baumbach’s film Marriage Story. He played in 2021 in the film The Many Saints of Newark as twin brothers “Hollywood Dick” Moltisanti and Salvatore “Sally” Moltisanti. He was also cast in Cocaine Bear. The movie is directed by actress Elizabeth Banks and is due in theaters in 2023.
