Who is B.J. Pak?

Byung Jin ”BJay” Pak (B.J. Pak) is a well-known Korean-American attorney and politician. He served as the United States attorney for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia from 2017 to 2021. Pak worked previously as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives as a Republican from 2011 to 2017.

B.J. Pak Career

Following graduation, B.J. Pak clerked for Richard Mills of the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois. He then worked in the Georgia House of Representatives as a Republican from 2011 to 2017. Pak represented the 102nd District from 2011 to 2013 and the 108th District from 2013 to 2017. He then decided not to run for re-election in the November 2016 election.

Additionally, he previously was a federal prosecutor. While he was working as an Assistant United States Attorney, Pak led the prosecution of individuals who tried to steal Coca-Cola’s trade secrets in order to sell them to Pepsi. He was Georgia’s first Asian-American U.S. Attorney and was the state’s first Korean-American legislator.

United States Attorney

Pak was nominated by President Donald Trump as the United States attorney for the Northern District of Georgia in July 2017. On September 28, 2017, he was confirmed for the role by the United States Senate. Trump then called top Georgia state election officials, on January 3, 2021, a call that was recorded and later launched. Trump pressured the officials to assist him in” finding” more votes in order to overturn the election of president-elect Biden. During the call, Trump referenced Atlanta and Fulton counties of Georgia and referred to the ”never-Trumper U.S. attorney there.” Pak’s district was among those counties. He then resigned the following day, citing ”unforeseen circumstances.”

Resignation

Later on January 4, 2021, he resigned unexpectedly. Justice Department officials have refused to say if Pak resigned voluntarily or was forced to do so. However, it was reported by The Wall Street Journal that he was forced to resign by senior White House officials in the Trump administration for not investigating false claims of election fraud ”enough.”

Trump then immediately replaced Pak with Bobby Christine, the Trump-appointed U.S. attorney from southern Georgia, bypassing top career prosecutor Kurt Erskine. Christine however also did not find evidence of election fraud. The Justice Department inspector general then opened an inquiry into Pak’s departure. In August 2021, Pak told the Senate Judiciary Committee that top Justice Department officials had told him on January 3, that Trump would fire him if he did not say there had been widespread vote fraud in Georgia. So resigning would pre-empt a public dismissal. Since then he has returned to private practice.
