Who is Bob Beckel?

Robert Gilliland Beckel famously known as Bob Beckel was an American professional political analyst and pundit, and a former political operative. He was previously an analyst and commentator on Fox News. Bob had been a commentator on Fox News where he co-hosted The Five until he was released in 2015. This was after being absent for several months while recovering from back surgery. He became a commentator for CNN, following his departure from Fox News in 2015.

Beckel went back to Fox News on January 16, 2017, as a co-host of The Five. Fox News announced he was released again on May 19, 2017. This happened after he was accused of making a racist remark against another Fox News employee.

Government

Beckel joined the United States Department of State as deputy assistant secretary of state for congressional relations in 1977. He became the youngest deputy assistant secretary of state in the Carter administration. While in the position, he assisted to shepherd the Panama Canal Treaty via Congress to ratification. The next year, Bob was appointed special assistant to the president for legislative affairs, working on the ratification of Salt II and Mideast treaties.

Politics

Bob was the campaign manager for Walter Mondale’s 1984 presidential campaign. He became recognized as the man who effectively wrapped Wendy’s slogan ”Where’s the beef?” around Gary Hart, Mondale’s opponent for the Democratic nomination, during the campaign.

Beckel, in late 1984, formed the consulting firm Bob Beckel & Associates, or BBA, a lobbying firm that was succeeded in 1985 by Beckel-Cowan. Bob also managed the campaign of Alan Blinken, the Democratic nominee for the United States Senate in Idaho in 2002, until he resigned following being targeted for extortion by a prostitute. He made a short appearance as himself on the Season 8 premiere of TV series 24 in 2010, in a mock debate with fellow Fox News Analyst Monica Crowley.

Bob joined Fox News as a co-host of The Five in 2011 and co-hosted some 708 episodes until June 2015, when Fox announced that he had left the program. His last appearance on the show was in February 2015, had been absent while recovering from back surgery. Beckel called for ”illegal shoot[ing]” Julian Assange, the editor of WikiLeaks in 2011, on a Fox News panel. He returned to The Five as co-host on January 16, 2017, but was later fired again on May 19, 2017.

CNN

Bob was hired by CNN to offer commentary on the 2016 election in October 2015.

USA Today

Bob was a columnist for USA Today from 2005 until the end of 2015. He wrote articles with a friend and political opposite Cal Thomas in the style of ”point-counterpoint.”

Health and death

Beckel was a recovering alcoholic. He was addicted to drugs and alcohol, and admitted in July 2011 on The Five, claiming cocaine was his drug of choice. Bob nearly choked to death in October 2011, on a piece of shrimp at a Fox News reception, but was saved by the Fox News chief Roger Ailes and The Five co-host Eric Bolling. Beckel was out of hosting for many weeks after being out to recover from back surgery in 2015. He later died on February 21, 2022, aged 73.

Beckel married the love of his life, Leland Ingham in 1992. However, the couple later divorced in 2002, having two children together.

Later Ingham was recognized as Leland Keyser after remarriage, she became embroiled in the Brett Kavanaugh nomination when she was named by Christine Blasey Ford as a friend. She could collaborate on Ford’s story of Kavanaugh sexually assaulting Ford when they were in high school. However, Ingham testified in Kavanaugh’s favor.
