Who Is Eric Garcetti?

Eric Garcetti is an American politician currently, serving as the mayor of Los Angeles and a member of the Democratic party. He has been serving as the mayor since 2013. Prior to being the mayor, he served as City Council President from 2006 to 2012. In addition, he is the first elected Jewish mayor.

Being elected at the age of 42, he was considered the youngest mayor in of over 100 years. Moreover, in July 2021, President Joe Biden announced that he will be nominating Garcetti to the position of US Ambassador to India.

Before he joined politics he was working as a visiting instructor of international affairs at the University of Southern California. In addition, he was also serving as an assistant professor of diplomacy and work affairs at Occidental College.

Election

He ran for an elective position in 2000 after incumbent Jackie Goldberg was elected to the State Assembly in 2000. In 2001 he was elected as the mayor despite the tough competition. he defeated Michael Woo with 52% to 48% of the vote cast. After that, he was re-elected for a second term in 2005. In 2005, he ran unopposed and in 2009 he received 72% of the vote cast.

On January 1, 2006, he started serving as the council president, he served in that position for six-year until January 12, 2012. After that, he was elected by his colleague to take over from Alex Padilla. Alex stepped down after he was elected to the California State Senate. Moreover, he was one of the first elected officials in Los Angeles to hold “office hours” each month. During office hours, each constituent can meet him face to face.

The campaign was scheduled for March 5th, 2013, however, after the election no candidate archived the majority which led to a runoff. In the runoff, he faced Wendy Greuel. Eric defeated Wendy with 53.9% of the votes on May 21st. The following day he met with his Villaraigosa, who worked with him for the rest of his term

On March 7, 2017, Garcetti was re-elected with 81.4% of the vote. Although he avoided a runoff election this time, voter turnout was low at 20%. His second term lasted for five years and six months instead of the typical four years due to a change in the city’s election calendar to synchronize mayoral elections with statewide elections.

Tenure

His term as the mayor has been described by at least two opinion piece authors as both progressive and pragmatic. According to him, he outlined his method as striking a balance on delivering on liberal goals for the city, while at the same time taking a more libertarian approach to government reform.

Budget Policy

As the mayor, he directed the department head through a memo written in October 2013, to develop an “a starting point” budget based on a 5% cut from the previous year.

He released a “hold-the-line” budget for the upcoming fiscal year in April 2014, proposing small increases in the number of city services and no reduction in the company tax. His $8.1 billion budget proposal needed city council approval, and it filled the $242 million hole “in part by relying on enhanced tax revenue predictions and cutbacks in empty employees.”

Moreover, in August, he confirmed that he would start his annual review of every city general manager as part of his commitment to try and improve the accountability baking Los Angeles officials.

After that, the financial Plan assumed the city’s workforce which included police officers and firefighters would not receive an increase in the coming year. The proposed change was to merge the city’s police and fire dispatch center to streamline and improve response time to 911 calls for emergencies and fires.

Economic policy

Garcetti stated in May 2014 that he was bringing two entrepreneurs in residence, Krisztina Holly and Amir Tehrani, on board. This entrepreneur was to design policies aimed at “helping company startups and entrepreneurs in Los Angeles expand.

According to him, he said “We want Los Angeles to be the preeminent destination for people beginning new enterprises,” “and there are no better guides for our efforts than successful entrepreneurs themselves.”

During his first visit to Sacramento since assuming office as mayor, Garcetti visited with Governor Jerry Brown and legislative leaders that July. Furthermore, he lobbied the governor to increase the current $100 million film production tax credit to prevent productions from leaving the state. Brown had agreed to support boosting the tax credit, he subsequently stated, albeit the size of the extension was uncertain. In addition, he demanded $420 million, or the same amount as New York’s credit. It was also four times larger than California’s current $100 million offer.
