Who Is Jay Inslee?

Jay Inslee is an American retired lawyer and politician serving as the 23rd governor of Washington, he has been holding the position since 2013.

Moreover, Inslee is a member of the Democratic Party. In addition, he also served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 1995. He was then reelected from 1999 to 2012. Furthermore, he was a candidate for the 2020 Democratic party presidential nomination.

Legal Career

After Jay graduated from law school, they relocated to Selah, a suburb of Yakima. After that, he joined the law firm Peters, Schmalz, Leadon & Fowler, where he was working as a city prosecutor. Moreover, Jay practiced law in Selah for 10 years. After practicing law for those ten years he became politically active in 1985. Now as a politician, he was advocating for the development of a new high school. The experience made him realize his interest in politics and encouraged him to run for political office.

1989 – 1993

Elections

Jay decided to run for a political position in 1988 when he was running for the Washington House of Representatives. This was after incumbent Republican State Representative Jim Lewis retired from office.

In this position, he was running against, Lynn Carmichael, who was the former mayor of Yakima and considered the front-runner in the competition. Moreover, on his side, he had difficulties balancing his more progressive ideology with the conservative leanings of Central Washington.

Furthermore, his campaigns were trying to correct this by focusing more on his rural upbringing and legal experience supporting local average people, farms, and businesses. As a candidate, The Washington State Trial Lawyers Association was his biggest donner.

Moreover, when he was presented with the prospect of a state budget surplus. He went ahead and urged a tax reduction for the middle class. However, his opponent Carmichael termed his proposal reckless. In addition, Carmichael rejected Inslee’s allegation that she supports a sales tax. Moreover, Jay was a vivacious and aggressive campaigner who benefited from retail politics.

During the primary, Carmichael was the first one with 43% while Jay was the second with 40%. However, in the general election, Jay was on the top garnering 52% while Carmichael was the second one with 48% of the votes. In addition, he was then reelected in 1990 garnering about 62% of the votes defeating Ted Mallotte who was a Republican nominee.

Inslee was born in Seattle Washington as the son of Adele A and Frank E. Inslee. In addition, his mother worked as a sales clerk at Sears. On the other hand, his father was working as a high school counselor and a football coach, where he was working at Tenino High School, Garfield High School, and Chief Sealth High School. Moreover, his father later became an athletic director for Seattle Public Schools.

He graduated from Seattle’s Ingraham High School, where he was an honor-roll student and star athlete, graduating in 1969. After high school, he attended college at Stanford University, where he wanted to study medicine. However, he was forced to drop out after a year since he was unable to get a scholarship.

He then attended the University of Washington, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1973. Jay went ahead and enrolled at Willamette University School of Law, where he earned a Juris Doctor in 1976.

Tenure as a House Representative

Jay Inslee was elected to the Senate from Washington state. In the Senate, he served as House Speaker until his retirement. He was formerly the mayor of Bellevue, Washington, when he stood for re-election.

1993 to 1995 Elections

The open congressional campaign was run by Inslee to vie for a seat in the central-eastern part of the state. Inslee’s home area of the district was secured by Yakima which was proportionally rural and agricultural-based, meanwhile, the southern part was more focused on research and nuclear waste dumping, grounded by the Tri-Cities. Inslee conquered a craved state senator to win the Democratic primary by achieving 1%, whatever the cost the district’s traditionalist inclined. Inslee won the overall general election in a highly close race.

1994

The Republican Revolution reelection of the year 1994 was lost in a rematch against his 1992 contestant Doc Hastings. Inslee Authorised his  1994 defeat in large part to his vote for the Federal Assault Weapons Ban.

After Inslee helped to open Japanese markets to American apples and oversee the nation’s biggest nuclear dumping site at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation near Richland, Washington.

1995-1999

Gubernatorial election 1996.

In 1996, he decided to run for the governorship position in Washington. However, he lost in the blanket primary. Gary Locke who was the Democratic King County Executive and former State Representative led the election garnering 24% of the votes.

After he failed in his bid for the governorship, he was appointed as a regional director for the United States Department of Health and Human Services by Bill Clinton.

Congress

1999-2012 elections

In 1998, Jay run for Congress where he was running in the first congressional district against Rick White who had already served for two terms and he was seeking for the third time. Despite the tight race Jay managed to win the election garnering 49.8% of the votes while Rick got 44.1% of the votes.

After winning his first term he was then re-elected six consecutive times. In July 2003, after Gary Locke declared he would not seek a third term as governor of Washington, Inslee briefly considered running for governor. However, he changed his mind and opted to stay in Congress.

Governorship

2012 Election

Jay declared his bid to run for governor of Washington on June 27, 2011. Moreover, his campaign largely emphasized job development, with scores of ideas to boost employment growth in renewable energy, aerospace, and biotechnology. In addition, he also endorsed a referendum initiative to legalize homosexual marriage, which was successful. Furthermore, he also opposed the tax increases. He went ahead ad won the election where he got 52% of the votes cast.

2016

In December 2015, Inslee declared his intention to seek reelection as governor on Washington’s public affairs television station TVW. Despite having struggles to work with the Republican-controlled Majority Coalition Caucus in the State Senate. Jay focused on increased expenditure on transportation and education as his major first-term success.

During the general election, Jay was competing against Bill Bryant, the former Commissioner of the Port of Seattle. Moreover, the campaign’s main concerns were climate change, job development, the minimum wage, and capital gains taxation. He went on and outraised Bryant and was re-elected with 54% of the vote in November.

2020 gubernatorial election

On March 1, 2019, Jay confirmed that he was going to participate in the presidential race. However, he insisted on the possibility of him running for a third term as the governor of Washington if his bid for president fails.

The race consisted of several potential Democratic gubernatorial candidates, such as state Attorney General Bob Ferguson, Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz. Also, King County Executive Dow Constantine was also waiting for Inslee’s decision before announcing their campaigns.

After his bid for the presidential race didn’t bring needed attraction he decided to seek re-election as the governor. In addition, he faced State Senator Phil Fortunato and others. He went ahead and won the election and he became the first Washington governor to be elected for the third term since 1972 after Dan Evans who was elected for the third term.
