Who is Andrew Cuomo?

Andrew Cuomo is an American attorney, author, and politician. Currently, he is serving as the 56th governor of New York since 2011. In addition, he is a member of the Democratic Party. Moreover, his father had previously served in the same position for three terms.

In 1993, he started serving as Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development for Community Planning and Development. He served in that position, until 1997. In 1997, he was appointed in the President Bill Clinton administration where he was serving as the 11th United States secretary of housing and urban development.

As a lawyer, he was elected in 2006 as the Attorney General of New York. After that, he vied for the New York gubernatorial seat in 2010 of which he won. Since then he has been reelected twice.

Career

Early Career

Cuomo started his career as a campaign manager, where, he was working for his father, Mario Cuomo. After his father won the election he became of his father’s policy advisors and sometimes Albany roommate. As hi

s father’s advisor, he was commonly known as an “enforcer” while his father was known as the “Nice Guy”.

In 1984, he became the assistant district attorney, a position he held for one year until 1985. In addition, he also worked briefly at the law firm of Blutrich, Falcone & Miller. Moreover, Cuomo is also the founder of Housing Enterprise for the Less Privileged, which he founded in 1986. In 1988, he step down from his law firm in order to work in the HELP on a full-time basis.

In 1990, he became the chair of the New York City Homeless Commission, which helped in creating policies that address homeless in the city. In addition, it also helped in providing more housing options.

Serving As Secretary of Housing and Urban Development

In 1993, he was appointed to the Department of Housing and Urban Development, where he was elected as Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development. After Henry Cisneros, who was the Secretary left the office at the end of Clinton’s first tenure, Cuomo was directly confirmed by the US Senate and succeeded him.  After taking the office, he served from January 1997 until 2001, after Bill Clinton’s tenure expired.

Political Career

2002 Gubernatorial Race

As a politician, he ran for the first time in 2002, during the gubernatorial election. He was running for the Democratic nomination for Governorship in New York. Originally, he was the potential candidate for the position and even led in fundraising and poll. However, his campaign took a u-turn after a gaffe, after he referenced the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.

After his chances dropped by a higher percentage due to his remarks, he decided to withdraw on the eve of the state convention.

Attorney General

Cuomo announced his bid for the Democratic State Attorney General in 2006. After his declaration, on May 30, 2006, he received 65% of the delegates’ endorsement. Despite him winning the endorsement, Mark J. Green, a former New York City public advocate and two-time candidate for Lieutenant Governor Charlie King were both named to the Democratic ballot. However, King later step down and supported Cuomo.

Cuomo managed to win the primary with the majority of the votes. Moreover, his winning the part nomination was seen as a very important rebound after his failed 2002 gubernatorial election. During the November general election on November 7, 2006, he won the election with 58% of the votes. He defeated a Republican nominee, former Westchester district attorney Jeanine Pirro.

Gubernatorial elections in 2010.

Cuomo declared his candidacy for the governorship on May 22, 2010. He made his announcement through a video that was posted on his campaign website. In addition, four days later he announced his lieutenant governor on May 26, 2010. He appointed Robert Duffy, Mayor of Rochester.

Cuomo went on and faced Carl Paladino, a Republican nominee, and a Buffalo-based businessman. His opponent was heavily supported by the Tea Party movement. Despite the tough race he managed to win the election garnering 62.6% of the votes. In addition, he received much support from the eastern region and downstate.

2014 election

After serving for the first time, he decided to seek re-election, in 2014. This time around, he changed his running mate and appointed Kathy Hochul as his new running mate. In addition, on March 5, 2014, Rob Astoria, a Westchester County executive confirmed his candidacy as a Republican nominee.

During the November 4, 2014 election, he won the election and he was re-elected for a second term garnering 54% of the vote while his opponent received 40.6% of the vote.

Though the voter turnout, was low, Cuomo easily won the general election. However, his margin of victory was narrower than it had been in his 2010 win. Astorino won the majority of rural New York but was defeated in New York City. After winning, Cuomo was sworn in as governor for the second time.

2018 election

During 2018, elections he faced actress and activist Cynthia Nixon in the primary. Cynthia in her campaign condemned him for failing to fix New York City Subway. Moreover, this was after his declaration of the 2017 News York City transit crisis. She went ahead and criticized him for not protecting undocumented immigrants and others.

Cuomo on his side went on to refute Nixon’s subway argument by arguing that the system is owned by New York City. However, in previous administrations, it was agreed it is the governor’s responsibility. According to an investigation done by New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer, the city pays for 70% of subway maintenance expenses.

Despite the criticism, Cuomo went ahead and defeated Nixon in the primary with 65.53% while she got 34.47% of the votes. After winning the primary he proceeded to the general election, where he defeated the Molinaro-Killian ticket by a margin of 59.6% to 36.2% of the votes.

2022
