Who is Keith Ellison?
Keith Ellison is an American Politician and attorney serving as the 30th attorney general of Minnesota. In addition, he is a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL).
Moreover, he was also a member of the U.S Representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district from 2007 until 2019. Furthermore, he also served as the titular Deputy Chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2017 to 2018. He rose to fame in November 2016, when he joined the race for chair of the Democratic National Committee. When he joined he was supported by different progressive groups and the US. After serving in Congress, on June 5th, 2018 he confirmed that he would not seek a second time. Instead, he was going to run for the office of the Minnesota Attorney General. He managed to win the primary and in the general election, he beat a Republican nominee Doug Wardlow.
As an attorney, he began his career after completing law school where he was hired by Lindquist & Vennum law firm. Keith worked for three years in the firm as a litigator specializing in civil rights, employment, and criminal defense law. After that, he became an executive director of the nonprofit Legal Rights Center in Minneapolis. Moreover, the center was dealing with the defense of indigent clients.
He later left the Legal Right center and joined the private sector at Hassan & Reed Ltd law firm. At the law firm, he was specializing in trial practice.

Serving as a Member of Representatives
Keith was elected for the first time in public office in 2002 as a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. Being elected he served in the house district 58B. When he was elected, his party was the smallest House minority in Minnesota history.
Ellison was then appointed to the Governmental Operations and Veterans Affairs Policy Committee, the Judiciary Policy & Finance Committee, and the Local Government & Metropolitan Affairs Committee during this term.
In addition, he also led an ethics complaint against Rep. Arlon Lindner for a speech Lindner read. Keith saw the said led to a denial that homosexuals were persecuted during the Holocaust.

Keith declared his intention after his predecessor Martin Olav Sabo announced his retirement. After that, won May 6, 2006, party endorsement at the DFL. On the first ballot, he won 2-1 and on the fourth ballot, he won the endorsement. During the primary, he challenged Ember Reichgotott Junge, a former state senator, Paul Ostrow, and Sabo’s chief of staff Mike Erlandson, who had endorsement from Sabo.
Keith won the 12, September 2006 primary with 41% of the vote. After that, he faced Republican Alan Fine, a Green Party nominee in the general election of which Keith won the seat with 56% of the vote cast.
Chair of Democratic National Committee candidacy
After the resignation of Donna Brazile, who was the acting chair in 2017. Keith considered running for the position competing with Howard Dean, Martin O’Malley, Raymond Buckley, and Jaime R. Harrison. at the time he was running for the position, he was serving as the chair of the congressional progressive caucus and emerged as a top candidate. Moreover, some of the commentators viewed the race as a proxy battle between the Clinton and Sanders factions of the party.
In Autumn 2016, Keith received endorsement from Senator Bernie Sanders and incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. He was also endorsed by Harry Reid, an outgoing Senate Minority Leader.
Since Barrack Obama’s loyalties were uneasy with his candidacy they started looking for a potential candidate to compete with him. Moreover, they went ahead and hold several meetings with Obama administration labor secretary Thomas Perez.
The opposition argued that Keith was holding a congress office and he was not going to be devoted if he won the election. On the other hand, Keith responded by saying he was going to resign from his position in congress if he wins the election, in order to focus on the seat on a full-time basis.
After a tough battle in February 2017, Perez was considered to be the front-runner. Perez went on to win the election. After he was elected, he quickly moved the motion for Keith to be elected as deputy. However, the position of deputy chair does not exist according to DNC bylaws. Moreover, Keith late resigned from the position of deputy in order to concentrate on his race for the Attorney General of Minnesota.
Minnesota Attorney General
Keith confirmed that he was not going to run for the seventh time in congress on June 5th, 2018. Instead, he was going to run for Minnesota Attorney General. Keith managed to win the Democratic primary in August, receiving 49.8% of the vote. Moreover, after he won the primary, he went on to face the Republican nominee, Doug Wardlow.
Keith went on and won the general election for attorney general with over 100,000 votes. Being elected in the position, he became the first black American to be elected. In addition, he was also the first Muslim person to hold that position.
During his tenure on, May 31, 2020, Keith accepted governor Tim Walz‘s request to take over as a special prosecutor in the George Floyd case. Three days later, they charged Derek Chauvin, the officer who knelt on Floyd until his death with second-degree murder.
