Money laundering

During his father’s military rule, Mohammed Abacha was involved in looting the government. A preliminary report published by the Abdulsalam Abubakar transitional government in November 1998 described the process. Sani Abacha told his National Security Adviser Ismaila Gwarzo to provide fake funding requests, which Abacha approved. The funds were usually sent in cash or travelers’ cheques by the Central Bank of Nigeria to Gwarzo Kuncnoni, who took them to Abacha’s house. Mohammed Abacha then arranged to launder the money to offshore accounts. An estimated $1.4 billion in cash was delivered in this way.

Like his father and mother, Mohammed Abacha has been referenced in 419 scams.

Supreme Court Order Arrest in 2014

The Supreme Court on Friday, January 17, 2014, stated that Mohammed Abacha, son of the late former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, must be arrested and returned to an Abuja High Court and face his trial over allegations of theft instituted against him by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Abacha is currently facing a 123-count charge leveled against him by the Federal Government of Nigeria, wherein he was alleged to be in possession of stolen property belonging to the Federal Government.

The property was allegedly stolen by his late father, Gen. Abacha, Nigeria’s former Head of State.

Abacha’s attempts to foil the trial failed at the Court of Appeal before heading to the apex court.

In its verdict, the apex court, however, submitted that immunity does not extend beyond the tenure of office and that even if the late head of state were alive, he could have been prosecuted for a criminal offense, not to talk of his son, who has never been a State Leader.

Therefore, Mohammed Abacha has to go and face his trial at the Abuja court.
