Who Is Ted Haggard?
Ted Haggard is a known American evangelical pastor. Moreover, he is the founder and a former pastor of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In addition, he is also the founder of the Association of Life-Giving Churches. He worked as President of the National Association of Evangelicals ( NAE) from 2003 until November 2006.
In November 2006, Ted made national news when male prostitute and masseur Mike Jones said that Haggard, who had advocated against same-sex marriage legislation, had paid him for sex for three years and had also purchased and used crystal methamphetamine.
After denying the first allegations claims, Haggard claimed to have bought methamphetamine and discarded it without using it. Shortly after the charges were made public, Haggard resigned from his position at New Life Church as well as his other leadership duties.
However, after some time Ted admitted to using drugs and having sexual encounters with Jones. In addition, he also admitted to having improper contact with a young man who attended New Life Church. Moreover, together with his wife, Gayle, founded St. James Church in Colorado Springs in 2010. Since September 2018, he is still the founding pastor of St. James Church.
New Life Church
The roots of New Life Church, according to Ted, claimed that in November 1984, while he was still an associate pastor of Bethany Rouge, Louisiana his mentor and role model Danny Ost, had a vision of him founding his own church. Danny Ost was a missionary to Mexico City.
As a result, he moved to Colorado shortly after and founded New Life Church. Initially, the 22 individuals who convened in Ted’s basement formed his church Moreover after a while the church grew to rented venues in strip malls.
Twenty-two years later, the New Life Church was operating on campus north of Colorado Springs. Moreover, by this time congregation had grown to 14,000.
In 1993, Ted made a trip with a group to Israel. Haggard described the trip as his “first prayer trip.” Together with his group, they stood on Mount Olives, where Haggard assured them that he felt the Holy Spirit speak to him. Since then, Haggard writes in The Life-Giving Church, that the apostolic authority has blessed him. He said ” My only problem is. Neither the enemy, nor the situation, nor the person. ”
Under his leadership, New Life Church formed the Association of Life-Giving Churches. The Church has been listed as a denomination by the U.S National Association of Evangelicals. Moreover, by 2006, Harper Magazine reported that it had consisted of some of 300 congregants.

Period Between Church Leadership Position
Together with his family relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, in April 2007 to start the restoration process. After arriving in Arizona they attended Phoenix First Assembly of God Church, whose pastor, Tommy Barnett, was a member of Haggard’s counseling team. Furthermore, Ted agreed to a severance agreement with New Life Church that would pay him through 2007. Moreover, one of the terms was that he depart the Colorado Springs region.
Ted Haggard’s recent stated income was $138,000 before taxes and perks. However, on February 6, 2008, the new pastor of New Life Church issued a press statement. In the statement, he stated that Haggard had requested to leave the team formed to “fix” him. As a result of his rehabilitation being “incomplete,” he was not welcome to return to vocational ministry at New Life.
Haggard asked for funds in August 2007 to help support his family while he attended college. However, his restoration team didn’t receive this well and called his request “inappropriate” and claimed Haggard “got a little ahead of himself.” According to the Colorado Secretary of State, “Families With a Mission” was dissolved in February 2007. Moreover, the rehabilitation team went ahead and encouraged him to look for secular work.
Moreover, the New Life Church’s severance agreement was expiring in June 2008. As a result, Haggard was “free to live anywhere he pleased”. After expiring Ted returned to his Colorado Springs home. In guest sermons in November 2008, he stated that his acts were motivated by sexual molestation by an adult when he was seven years old. He also consented to be interviewed for Alexandra Pelosi’s HBO documentary on his sex scandal.
Furthermore together with his wife Gayle they appeared on national television shows to deliver public apologies and confessions. Ted stated in January 2009 that he wanted his wife to divorce him as a result of the controversy.
He told Charisma magazine in August 2009, “I plunged into sin and failed to remove myself.” In the Christian community, moreover, he suggests Christian therapy to anybody who is struggling with “compulsive thoughts or habits” in the Christian Community. In march 2009 he attended a performance in New York of This Beautiful City and the Colorado Springs evangelical community.
