Who is Deb Haaland?

Deb Haaland is an American politician, who is serving as the 54th United States secretary of the interior. In addition, she is a member of the Democratic Party. Moreover, she has also served as chair of the New Mexico Democratic Party from 2015 to 2017.

Furthermore, she has also served as the U.S. representative for New Mexico’s 1st congressional district from 2019 to 2021. In addition, Deb is an active member of the Laguna Pueblo.

As a US representative, her congressional district included most of Albuquerque and most of its suburbs. Moreover, together with Sharice Davids, she is one of the first two Native American women who were elected to the U.S. Congress. Moreover, Deb is a political progressive who supports the Green New Deal and Medicare for All.

President Joe Biden confirmed that he will nominate Deb to be Secretary of the Interior on December 17, 2020. After she was nominated, she was then confirmed by the United States Senate by a vote of 51–40, on March 15, 2021. Moreover, after she was inaugurated on March 16, 2021, she became the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet secretary and the second to serve in the Cabinet, following Republican former Vice President John McCain.

Career

During Barack Obama’s presidential election campaign in 2012,  Deb served as the state’s vote director for Native Americans. Still, in 2012, she served as the head of the Democratic Party of New Mexico’s Native American Caucus, a position she held until 2013. Furthermore, in 2014, she decided to run for Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico.

In addition, the then-New Mexico Attorney General Gary King was the one leading her ticket. Gary was elected as the Democratic nominee for Governor of New Mexico. However, they were defeated by the Republican Susana Martinez and Lieutenant Governor John Sanchez.

Moreover, in April 2015, she was elected as the Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. Furthermore, during her term as the Chair, the party managed to regain control of the New Mexico House of Representatives. Moreover, the party also regained control of the office of the New Mexico Secretary of State.

As a result, of her good work, she has been credited with rebuilding the state party following Democratic losses in New Mexico in 2014. Moreover, in her two-year stint as chair, she generated enough money to pay off seven years of debt accrued by prior chairs.

She was born in Winslow, Arizona as the daughter of Mary Toya and John David. Serving in the House of Representatives

2018 Election

After her term expired as the state party Chair, she declared her intention to run for the United States House of Representatives in New Mexico’s 1st congressional district in the 2018 elections. Her bid was to succeed Michelle Lujan Grisham who at the time was running for governor.

In June 2018, Deb won against Damon Martinez and Antoinette Sedillo Lopez for the Democratic Party candidacy. Moreover, she gained 40.5% of the vote and capturing every county in the district.

Moreover, during the November 6 general election, she defeated former New Mexico State Representative Janice Arnold-Jones. Deb went ahead and received 59.1% of the vote. Moreover, she won three of the district’s five counties. Furthermore, her win was part of a sweep of New Mexico that made Democrats win every statewide and federal office on the ballot that year. Furthermore, they expanded their majority in the New Mexico House of Representatives.

2020 election

After serving for the first term she decided to seek reelection in 2020. During the November 3 general election, she defeated retired police detective Michelle Garcia Holmes, who ran for Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico in the 2018 gubernatorial election. Deb managed to get 58.2% of the vote.

Tenure

Her election made her one of the second Native American women to seat in Congress. Furthermore, during her swearing-in ceremony in January 2019, Deb dressed up in a traditional Pueblo dress, Neckless, and Moccasins.

Moreover, during a debate on March 7th, 2019 where they were voting rights and campaign finance, Deb became the first Native American woman to preside over the U.S House of Representatives.

Serving as the Secretary of the Interior

Nomination and Confirmation

On December 17, 2020, incoming President Joe Biden declared his intention to nominate Haaland to the position of Secretary of the Interior. Before Biden nominated Haaland, several top Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, and Senator Elizabeth Warren, expressed support for her as Secretary of the Interior.

On March 15, 2021, she was approved by the Senate 51–40, with four Republicans (Collins, Murkowski, Sullivan, and Graham) voting yes. in addition, she is the country’s first Native American Cabinet secretary. As a result, of her resignation from the House, a special election was conducted in 2021. After her confirmation, she was sworn in on March 18, 2021.
