Who is Tullian Tchividjian?

Tullian Tchividjian (William Graham Tullian Tchividjian) is an American pastor and author. In addition, he is also the grandson of Billy Graham. As an author, he has written over a half dozen books about Christianity and current issues, such as One Way Love and It is Finished.

Before 2015, he was a blogger for some time for The Gospel Coalition. The coalition contributed to a variety of secular and Christian publications. More Tullian appeared in numerous major television news programs. Furthermore, Tchividjian is the founder of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. In addition, he got an invitation to join congregations in 2009, and become the second senior pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Where he succeeded the church’s late founder and long-term leader, D. James Kennedy.

However, Tullian stepped down from Coral Ridge in 2015 and began The Sanctuary, 2019 an unaffiliated church in Jupiter, Florida.

Career

New City Presbyterian Church

Prior to founding New City Presbyterian Church (New City ), he spent a short to-year stint at a Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church in Knoxville, Tennesse. He later founded and ministered to New City in Coconut Creek-Margate, Florida in 2003.

The church has been described as a “young church plant,”. The church later would merge with the neighboring, bigger, and well-known Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in 2009. It was claimed to have a congregation of 650 people at the time of the merger. Moreover, he noted that at the time that denominations of the merging churches are both theologically conservative and had maintained a strong working relationship over the years.

As it was stated by Tullian and others to James D.Davis, who was the Religion editor of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. The process of deciding leadership that resulted in the merger of the two churches was a year-long process managed by ” Coral Ridge’s 15-member Pulpit Nominating Committee”.

Coral Ridge is said to have contacted Tullian thrice during the process, beginning in May 2008. Tullian has asserted that a church merger is required for him to consider that pastorate at Coral Ridge. Moreover, the final discussion between Tchividjian and Coral Ridge began just before Christmas 2008.

The official merger of the two churches happened on Easter Sunday, April 12th, 2009. After that, Tullian was approved and installed as Coral Ridge’s senior pastor on May 10, 2009. He officially succeeded its late founding pastor, D. James Kennedy. Moreover, the installation address was delivered by Evangelical Christian writer and social critic, Os Guinness. Over 5,000 people are said to have attended the installation worship service.

After he took over, he came with a less formal worship style from New City, for instance, conducting services in a suit and tie instead of the vestment Kennedy had worn.

He attended the Westminster Academy, an educational ministry of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. However, it is said he dropped out the school during the rebellion. He later embarked and joined Columbia, International University, in Columbia, South Carolina, where he graduated with a BA in philosophy in 1997. After that, he earned a Master’s of Divinity degree at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando in 2001.

He married his first wife Kim in 1994, however, things between them didn’t work out and they filed for divorce in August 2015.

Challenges

At the time Tullian was being installed, the church was reported to have a weekly attendance of about 18,000 from a membership of 2,200 people. Moreover, the combined weekly attendance of the merged congregations was expected to be around 2, 450 persons.

However, the difference in pastoral style and his rejection of culture war politics led to feud in the church. Moreover, Tullian recall was sought by a group led by Kennedy’s daughter, Jennifer, within 6 months of his installation.

According to Bobby Ross Jr. of Christianity Today, he defines the conclusion of the whole matter is “Tchividjian survived an effort… by… church members to remove him.” In addition, in September 2009, Tchividjian was re-elected by a majority of the congregation. However, the people who were pursuing the removal case were reported as having been expelled from the church.

Resignation

Tullian stepped down as senior pastor of the Presbyterian Church on June 21, 2015. His resignation came after he confessed to having an extramarital affair. He was disposed of by the South Florida Presbytery of the PCA after he ruled him ” unfit for Christian ministry”.

Willow Creek (Winter Springs, Florida)

On September 2, 2015, it was confirmed that he had been appointed as Director of Ministry Development at Willow Creek Church (PCA) in Winter Springs, Florida, in a non-leadership, non-pastoral staff role.

However, he was then sacked from his role as a pastoral leader at Willow Creek on March 16, 2016 This was after the disclosure of a second extramarital affair, one that predated his previously disclosed affair and happened during his former role as a pastoral leader at Coral Ridge.

The Sanctuary

Furthermore, after his ups and down, he decided to open a sanctuary. In 2019, together with his wife, they founded The Sanctuary, which is an unaffiliated church in Jupiter, Florida.

Furthermore, Tulliani is one of the founders of LIBERATE, a resource ministry that held an annual conference, and published music, books, and websites.
